| Community Outreach & Education |
Change can only happen through relationships. Staff and volunteers partner with local and national community members, organizations and initiatives to build awareness and work towards lasting relationships. Key issues include domestic violence, immigration and its impact on survivors of violence, the myth of the model minority, hate crimes, and health education. |
Outreach and education vehicles include community forums, the Chai House series in collaboration with Trikone Atlanta, ongoing conversations with the Ismaili women’s leadership and the South Asian Ministry of the First Decatur Church about child sexual abuse and community accountability as well as workshops with the Nepalese community on immigration rights of those seeking safety under anti-trafficking initiatives. Following are some examples of current initiatives: |
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TRAINING: There are many groups and programs conducting domestic and sexual violence training, for an overall understanding of family violence within the South Asian immigrant community do not hesitate to contact volunteer@raksha.org for those requests. Any questions related to child sexual abuse prevention & social justice please contact priyanka@act2transform.org. |
ATLSAHARA: Violence against women, specifically sexual violence, along with a culture of silence around sexuality, sexual wellness, and topics of sex in general ostracize many in our community who have been directly affected, or have lost a loved one to HIV/AIDS. Sahara is a community-lead initiative that is focused on the need for research, education, and action on HIV/AIDS within the South Asian community in Atlanta. Email volunteer@raksha.org, if you are interested in finding out more. |
RACIAL JUSTICE CAMPAIGN AGAINST OPERATION METH MERCHANT: Raksha is one of many endorsing organizations of a coalition called Racial Justice Campaign Against Operation Meth Merchant to stop the unlawful and unjust prosecutions of South Asian convenience store owners in North Georgia and build lasting alliances between immigrant communities and people of color in northwest Georgia. For more information please go to www.stopoperationmethmerchant.org. This campaign has been a reminder to many in the anti-violence community that the work to end violence against women must also address the ways in which their families are targeted by racial profiling. |
