For Immediate Release
Monday, January 26, Atlanta -- The Kaya Collective, a group of artists, activists, and community organizers will hold their premier event, entitled "Beginnings," on Saturday, February 7, at The Five Spot located at 1123 Euclid Avenue in Little Five Points.
"I think we should enjoy both the uniqueness and the universality of the human experience," said Alka Roy, artistic director and one of the founding members of the collective. "The idea of this collective is to create a space for innovative and original works by artists and activists who are speaking their minds, especially those from the South Asian region."
Kaya will initially focus on works dealing with the South Asian experience, but hopes to evolve into a multicultural vehicle for creatively sharing and raising voices that are not often heard within other cultures and communities.
"This is our first event. We have a lot of ideas and a stubborn belief that we just have to do it. I believe real change comes slowly, with participation and the right amount of stubbornness," she added. "I hope a lot of community members, artists of different disciplines, activists, and just curious people will come out and support us and learn about us as we get started. I am excited about the possibility of this space in Atlanta."
The exhibition will feature local writers, poets, performers, visual artists, and musicians presenting works in progress, most of which are recent collaborative pieces.
