Raksha, meaning protection in various south Asian languages, is a local Georgia based non profit serving the South Asian community since 1995. Raksha’s mission is to promote a stronger and healthier South Asian community through confidential support services, education, and advocacy.

Position Summary
The full-time Paralegal will support the Raksha Family Law Attorney by performing a variety of tasks, such as maintaining and organizing files, conducting legal research, and drafting documents.

  • Bachelor’s degree or Associate degree in the paralegal studies field or a paralegal certificate. Additionally, the applicant must have a minimum of one (1) year of paralegal/administrative experience.
  • Experience working with and advocating for survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault & stalking is highly preferred
  • Experience working with clients of diverse racial, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Experience working with immigrant population and knowledge of the intersectionality of family law and immigration issues
  • The ability to speak at least one South Asian language is highly preferred
  • Must be respectful and responsive to cultural beliefs and practices within a client’s community
  • Excellent communication skills, including ability to communicate clearly with a wide range of people to both understand, support, and convey the clients’ and advocates’ needs
  • Excellent critical-thinking, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Investigative mind and strong research skills
  • Working knowledge of legal database software
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite
  • Research: Researching laws, regulations, and legal articles relevant to a case 
  • Document preparation: Drafting legal documents, such as contracts, pleadings, and discovery notices 
  • Case management: Organizing and maintaining legal documents, case files, and evidence 
  • Client communication: Interviewing clients and witnesses, scheduling meetings, and calling clients, witnesses, and lawyer 
  • Trial preparation: Assisting lawyer during trials by handling exhibits, taking notes, and reviewing transcripts 
  • Document filing: Filing legal documents with the court, government agency, or opposing counsel 
  • Monitoring legal changes: Keeping track of changes in the legal framework and providing updates
  • Report and receive supervision from Raksha Family Law Attorney
  • Weekly check-ins with ELSI project coordinator (Raksha’s Director of Programs)

Salary Range: $50,000 – 55,000 annually based on experience

  • Salary: 50-55K, annually based on experience
  • This will be a hybrid, full-time position. Based on case load, client and court appointments, the paralegal will develop a work schedule after consulting with the staff attorney. The paralegal is expected to attend any mandatory in-person staff meetings, training and other events. Work hours can vary from Raksha office hours of 9am-5pm, Monday Through Friday and may include weekend hours.

  • 15 days of PTO and 8 days of vacation in year 1 and 28 PTO and 12 days of vacation for 1-4 years accrued in accordance with company policy (prorated based on date of hire) but increases with years of services)

  • Answer Raksha’s phone line, client-related calls and emails
  • Conduct intakes with new clients
  • Provide and document advocacy and support to individual clients
  • Provide safety planning to clients in crisis
  • Provide legal, medical, career, housing/shelter and other referrals to clients
  • Complete necessary paperwork in applying for attorneys through legal project
  • Arrange meetings with attorneys and clients
  • Accompany clients for hearings and meetings with attorneys when needed
  • Provide interpretation between attorney and client when needed
  • Attend weekly caseworker meetings, Check-ins, staff renewal and staff meetings
  • Attend trainings and conferences
  • Assist in coordinating support groups, workshops, etc.
  • Assist with grant reporting requirements
  • Assist other advocates as needed
  • Provide housing and economic empowerment and advocacy to clients who need focused support to address complicated housing needs.
  • Build relationships with landlords willing to provide housing options for clients with complex housing needs
  • Develop and maintain strategic partnerships to address the emerging housing needs of survivors.
  • Provide language specific services by using language line
  • Flexibility in handling tasks outside of the job description
  • Bachelor’s (Master’s preferred) degree in social work, psychology, counseling or education 
  • One-year work experience in a related field highly preferred
  • Fluency in Hindi/Urdu, Bangla, Gujarati, Nepali or any other South Asian language preferred
  • Knowledge of issues related to domestic violence, child abuse and sexual assault
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work flexible hours which include some evenings and weekends
  • Ability to handle crisis situations and provide crisis management
  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Word, Research on internet, etc)
  • Leadership qualities and public speaking desirable
  • A minimum of two-year commitment
  • Team-oriented

Salary Range: $48,000 – 54,,000 with benefits, depending on experience and skills.
